Location of manufacturing FDI in Hungary: How important are inter-company relationships?
In a new economic geography framework with input-output linkages, this study analyses decisions made by foreign firms about their location within Hungary. These firm-to-firm contacts are modelled by creating several corporate customer and supplier access measures for all new foreign corporations. In order to see the impact of these variables other forces of agglomeration such as distance to Western European markets and dispersion forces such as high wages are taken into account. Investigation is carried out on a small-to-medium sized European economy that has just gone through economic transition involving almost unprecedented rapid market liberalisation. A rich dataset of corporate tax returns of Hungarian firms between 1992 and 2002 as well as annual labor surveys are used to get location, sales and wage data. Various econometric specifications of both discrete choice and count data models are applied to provide robustness of results that may be crucial when working with firm level data.economic geography, industrial location, FDI, regional policy, discrete choice models
A magyar üzemanyagpiac árképzési és versenymodelljének vizsgálata = Price Setting and Market Structure in the Hungarian Gasoline Market
A két fúzió hatásmechanizmusa ugyanakkor eltérő. | Our empirical research program analyzed the relationship between price setting, competitive structure and geographical segmentation on the Hungarian retail gasoline market between 2006 and 2008. The first paper studies the relationship and supply-side concentration on the Hungarian retail gasoline market. We can conclude that the differences in local concentration only partially explain the big price differences observed between different local markets. The second paper analyses how market structure, geographical attributes and in particular, demand will influence prices. The paper finds that demand influences prices mainly through the number of stations. The third paper examines the effect of two important retail mergers on the prices of the different brands. Our results indicate that both mergers had a statistically significant, but economically insignificant effect on prices. We can however observe different effect mechanisms for the two mergers. The fourth paper examines the transmission between wholesale and retail prices. The results show that on average retail prices react symmetrically to the changes in wholesale prices, but asymmetries can be tracked at certain stations linked to four brands
Spillovers from Multinationals to Heterogeneous Domestic Firms: Evidence from Hungary
Technological and informational spillovers from multinational firms can be particularly beneficial to domestic firms especially in less developed economies. The technological superiority and management experience of foreign multinational firms yield various opportunities for learning. Yet, the importance of foreign firm's spillovers might vary with respect to the different intensities of the linkage between the multinational and the domestic firm, the differences in firms' absorptive capacity and their ability to face competition. We show using firm-level Hungarian data that positive spillovers from multinationals depend on the level of productivity and the exporting status of the domestic firm. Larger and more productive firms are more able to reap spillovers from multinationals than smaller and less productive firms. The export status, in contrast, is of minor importance.FDI.
